Fushun Mining Group to test Boss Energy's oil shale resources in Tasmania
Boss Energy (ASX:BOE) has engaged the services of Fushun Mining Group, a
large Chinese state-owned coal and oil shale company located in Fushun,
Liaoning Province, to carry out a number of detailed tests on its
Latrobe oil shale resource in Tasmania.
Boss Energy said it
intends to ship 500 kg of as-mined oil shale to Fushun Mining Group for
tests. These tests are to characterise the oil shale and products of oil
shale retorting.
Specifically the proposed tests are to
characterise Latrobe oil shale to determine its physical and chemical
properties, evaluate the oil shale in the context of the Fushun
Technology and to determine key operating parameters.
The intent
of the technology is to produce oil from oil shale. As part of the
tests, the oil produced from oil shale will be analysed to determine its
physical and chemical properties as well as an elemental analysis will
also be performed.
Fushun Mining Group have indicated that the
tests should be complete within four weeks of receipt of the oil shale
sample, and will provide results and analysis report to Boss Energy on
completion of the testing program.
The Fushun Mining Group’s oil
shale processing facility is one of the largest oil shale-to-oil
operating facilities in the world and processes about 6 million tonnes
of oil shale per year.
The oil shale plant is a subsidiary of the
state owned Fushun Mining Group. The Fushun process uses heat to break
down the hydrocarbons in the oil shale to produce oil.
Executive
Director Robert Grover said a decision on pilot plant trials, the next
stage of the project, would only be made after a detailed technical
review of the test results by Boss Energy and its technical consultants,
and a commercial evaluation by Boss Energy.
