IBC signs development deal with US Army for beryllium alloys
IBC Advanced Alloys (CVE:IB) said Tuesday it has signed an agreement with the US Military's Army Research Laboratory and the Naval Air Systems Command to jointly develop the company's line of lightweight beryllium aluminum alloys for aerospace applications.
The family of beryllium alloys, known as Beralcast, will be tested for use in the US Armed Forces' fire scout program and other umanned air vehicle initiatives. The joint venture will look to identify component and substructures for commercial scale manufacturing to improve the sensors on board aircrafts, IBC said.
Unmanned air vehicles can fly by themselves, or be piloted remotely, and are becoming an increasingly important part of the US's airborne military capacity.
The Beralcast alloy is more than three times stiffer than aluminum, with 22% less weight, and is lower cost.
"IBC EngineeredMaterials has a strong aerospace background with a US Military Handbook approved product for advanced aerospace applications," said IBC Engineered Materials president, Ray White.
