Suntech Power in talks with State Grid of China about possible cooperation
Suntech Power’s CEO Zhengrong Shi was yesterday quoted in local publication Netease Finance saying that the company may partner with State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC).
Mr. Shi said in interview that he had recently had a three-hour meeting with Zhenya Liu, General Manager of SGCC, and that while the two companies do not have a strategic cooperation agreement at present, they will have in the future.
SGCC is a state-owned corporation founded in 2002 to build and operate power grids.
China recently announced it is aiming for an installed solar power capacity of 2 GW by 2011, nearly a 15-fold jump from its current 140 MW.
Six provinces in North-west China have been singled out as suitable bases for the expansion, based on their climates. These are all however far away from the high-energy demand south and east coasts, meaning that China’s grid companies will be heavily involved with the projects.
