Asia Cement expands production
Asia Cement (China) (HK:0743), the largest cement producer in Sichuan and the Central Yangtze River Region, has announced the beginning of production at its new Yadong plant near Wuhan in Hubei province. The company has also begun construction of new kilns to expand the plant, already the biggest in the region. The new kilns are due to be ready for production by the end of 2010.
The group’s production capacity in the region is set to increase to 8.3m tonnes of clinker annually once the plant is fully completed (clinker is the solid material produced in kilns before further processing into cement). Last year the production volume of four of the company’s existing kilns exceeded their design capacity.
Chairman Mr. Hsu Shu-tong said in a statement: "The cement industry in the Central Yangtze River Region continues to benefit from the relocation of industries from the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta, and from rapid industrialisation and urbanisation. As a result, cement consumption in the region has continued to rise while prices have remained stable". The government has also invested in a wide range of infrastructure projects in its massive stimulus packages, and Asia Cement is supplying a number of these projects in the region.
The company intends to continue to expand its production capacity over the next few years to strengthen market share. It also plans to develop the use of residues such as fly ash during production to lower costs.
