Inventec plans HP supply plant in Chongqing
Taiwan laptop manufacturer Inventec is planning to construct a factory in Chongqing to supply industry leader Hewlett Packard (HPQ). The plant is intended to make over four million laptops a year.
Inventec shares rose 0.4 percent to T$12.65 on the news, behind the TAIEX index’s overall 1.63 percent climb.
The plant may begin production as early as the second half of this year, a Chongqing official said anonymously, despite Inventec having planned to start production in 2010.
While top-end PC producers like HP usually design their computers, these companies frequently contract out manufacturing operations to original design manufacturers (ODMs), including Inventec.
Many OEMs are based in Taiwan, where manufacturers including Compal (TW:2324) and Quanta (TW:2382) make over 80 percent of the laptops in the world.
